An electrocardiogram, also known as an ECG, is a straightforward and painless test used to measure the heart’s electrical activity and rhythm. During an ECG, patches containing sensors are attached to the skin for a few minutes, while recordings are relayed to a screen to produce a series of graphs.

ECG tests can be useful to investigate and monitor a range of conditions and symptoms, including arrhythmia (abnormal heart rhythm), heart disease and heart attacks.

The Clinic @ 78 can provide electrocardiograms for patients experiencing new symptoms or those with a history of heart problems, carried out on site at our clinic. If required, we can also arrange follow-ups with a heart specialist and further tests and investigations.

Cardiac rhythm monitors, or heart rhythm monitors, enable specialists to monitor a patient’s heart rhythm over a period of time. This usually involves a small, compact monitor that people can discreetly wear under their clothes or attached to their belt as required.

Alongside investigations within the clinic, such as an ECG and echocardiogram, monitoring patterns over a 24-hour period or up to seven days means we can get a clearer overview of what’s happening at different times of the day. For many people experiencing symptoms of arrhythmia (abnormal heart rhythm), such as palpitations, an irregular or erratic heart rate, or an unusually slow or fast pulse, symptoms may come and go. This means a clinic-based test may sometimes miss them, so longer-term monitoring may be necessary.

The Clinic @ 78’s cardiology team can arrange cardiac rhythm monitors, as well as any other tests and investigations and follow-ups where required.

An echocardiogram (heart scan), also known as an ‘echo’ test, is an ultrasound scan of the heart and surrounding blood vessels. This can enable specialists to identify and assess any physical abnormalities or signs of damage within the heart’s chambers, valves and blood vessels.

Echocardiograms are painless and completely safe. During the test, a number of patches containing sensors will be attached to your chest. The specialist carrying out the echocardiogram will then use a smooth ultrasound probe to carry out the scan. As the probe is moved across your chest, images will be related to a screen. Depending on your symptoms and history, the procedure can take anything from 15-60 minutes to complete.

A spirometry is a simple lung function test that can be helpful for diagnosing and monitoring a range of symptoms and conditions involving lung health and breathing. This includes asthma, pulmonary fibrosis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Spirometry tests may also be advised for patients who smoke or have an ongoing cough or breathlessness, to check for signs of damage or complications that may require treatment.

During the test, a clip will be placed on your nose and you will be asked to inhale deeply and breath into a special device. This is attached to a compact machine which can measure the volume of your breathing. Depending on your individual health history, you may be given some advice on preparing for the test. For example, avoiding smoking and vigorous exercise beforehand.
