Mr Tyrone Carpenter is a Consultant Gynaecologist at University Hospitals Dorset and Honorary Clinical Lecturer at Southampton University. He qualified from St Bartholomew’s Hospital Medical School.

Mr Carpenter treats most gynaecological conditions including menstrual disorders, pelvic pain and endometriosis, ovarian cysts, primary prolapse. He does not treat gynaecological cancers or abnormal smears.

As well as undertaking all routine gynaecological procedures he has special expertise in Minimal Access Surgery (Keyhole surgery). He is the senior gynaecologist for minimal access surgery in Poole, as well as running the Dorset Endometriosis Centre.

Are painful periods a sign of endometriosis?

Mr Tyrone Carpenter explains that painful periods are a very common problem, and it is often difficult to distinguish normal painful periods from endometriosis painful periods. Symptoms of endometriosis also include pain with intercourse or pain when you open your bowels, and perhaps a family history of endometriosis.

What causes heavy periods?

Mr Tyrone Carpenter explains that in most cases, no physical cause is found for heavy periods. There are recognised causes, such as fibroids, but in most cases, no exact cause is found.

Endometriosis is a common gynaecological condition in which tissue similar to the lining of the womb grows in other places, such as the ovaries and fallopian tubes.

Symptoms can include:

Pelvic pain
Strong pain with periods
Heavy bleeding
Bleeding between periods

Endometriosis can be mistaken for other conditions that cause pelvic pain, such as pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), or ovarian cysts, so it is important to speak to a specialist if you are experiencing these symptoms.

Heavy and painful periods can have many causes, such as conditions affecting your womb, ovaries, and hormones.

We use a hysterectomy procedure when you need or want your womb (uterus) removed.

A hysterectomy can be total or partial.

We use a laparoscopy (Keyhole surgery) to examine the organs in your abdomen and pelvis. This procedure involves small incisions (cuts), which makes it a low-risk procedure.

In gynaecology, we use laparoscopy to look at a woman’s reproductive system to identify what is causing symptoms such as pelvic pain.

Mr Carpenter is the only gynaecologist in Dorset and Wiltshire accredited by the BSGE and NHS England to undertake laparoscopic (Keyhole) surgery for severe endometriosis. He works alongside Professor Tas Qureshi in this area.
