Around the size of a small rugby ball, the liver is the second-largest organ in the human body. It sits behind the right side of your ribcage. One of the liver’s main roles is to filter the blood leaving the stomach and intestines, separating nutrients and toxins. There are many other functions of the liver, such as supporting blood clots and metabolising fats, carbohydrates, and proteins.

If you have a problem with your liver, you may experience

    • Itchy skin
    • Feeling or being sick
    • Swollen legs or ankles
    • Extreme tiredness/ fatigue
    • Yellow eyes and skin (jaundice)
    • Abdominal pain on the right side
    • Dark pee (urine) and pale poo (stools)
    • Loss of appetite and possibly weight loss

Maintaining a healthy weight, eating the right foods and avoiding excessive alcohol consumption can all help you prevent liver problems.

To diagnose liver disease, we may perform blood and imaging tests and a liver biopsy. If you think you have a liver condition, get in touch today to receive diagnostic tests and treatment.

The two main forms of IBD (inflammatory bowel disease) are Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. These lifelong (chronic) conditions cause inflammation in the digestive tract. Crohn’s can affect anywhere in the digestive system, but ulcerative colitis typically affects the large intestine only. The symptoms of IBD can range from mild to severe.

    Common IBD symptoms include

    • Bloating
    • Loss of appetite
    • Tiredness/ fatigue
    • Unintentional weight loss
    • Abdominal pain and cramping
    • Diarrhoea (sometimes bloody)

Some people with IBD also experience arthritis and problems with their eyes or skin. To diagnose IBD, we may need to perform endoscopy and imaging tests. We may also need to do stool studies and blood tests.

If you suspect you have IBD, contact our team. Our expert gastroenterologists offer a thorough diagnostic process to determine the cause of your symptoms. Once we’ve identified the cause of your problems, we will then form a tailored treatment plan.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is commonly confused with IBD (above). Roughly one in five to one in ten people in the UK will experience IBS. Though, many people have mild symptoms only.

    IBS symptoms include

    • Bloating and gas
    • Low energy levels
    • Feeling sick (nausea)
    • Heartburn (less common)
    • Abdominal pain and cramps
    • Changing bowel movements
    • Constipation, diarrhoea, or both

IBS symptoms can come and go – we call this a flare-up. Specific foods, medications, stress and anxiety can trigger an IBS flare-up. Women are more likely to have IBS than men and may experience a flare-up during their period.

It can be hard to diagnose IBS, and we’ll need to rule out other, more serious conditions. It can be hard to diagnose IBS as there are no tests for IBS. But we’ll need to rule out other, more serious conditions. Blood and stool tests can help us with this, as can imaging tests, such as X-rays.

During your appointment, we’ll ask you to describe your symptoms, their severity, and how long you’ve had them. If you have noticed any triggers, share them with your doctor, as these can help us with our diagnosis.

When this stomach acid travels up your throat, we call it acid reflux. Acid reflux often causes a bitter taste in your mouth and can lead you to need to cough or clear your throat.
