Treatments & Conditions

If you’re experiencing problems with your periods, speaking to a gynaecologist can help put your mind at ease, and diagnose any problems you might have. They will look for symptoms like heavy periods, light or no periods, painful periods, or the signs of premenstrual syndrome (PMS).

PMS relates to the variety of physical and psychological symptoms experienced during the menstrual cycle. If these symptoms become severe, you may have Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD). If you’re concerned about your periods, speak to our specialists today.

Menorrhagia is the experience of heavy, prolonged periods.

Heavy periods may be accompanied by painful periods and pain in the lower abdomen, pelvis or lower back, or during sex. This would suggest that you might have endometriosis or adenomyosis.

Heavy periods can also be a sign of PCOS, though this condition is more commonly associated with light or absent periods.

Other causes of heavy bleeding include:

    • Uterine fibroids
    • Hormonal imbalance
    • A birth control device
    • Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)
    • Abnormal pregnancies, such as an ectopic pregnancy or a miscarriage

Ultrasound scans can aid the diagnosis of concerns such as pelvic pain and heavy periods. We offer a high-quality ultrasound diagnostic service for women who have, or are worried they might have, gynaecological problems.

Using ultrasound, we can see signs of problems, such as ovarian cysts, which could suggest polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or endometriosis. Visit our Patient Hub to watch our video FAQs about endometriosis and heavy periods.
